Clean Air Bill Taken To The House Of Lords

The government could be more culpable of protecting the quality of air in England and Wales if the Clean Air Bill passes the next stage at the House of Lords.

Ella’s Law, as it is otherwise known, was introduced by Baroness Jenny Jones to commit public bodies to review and monitor pollutants and pollution limits, ensuring the UK has clean air within five years of being made into a law.

After the bill was passed, Baroness Jones tweeted: “My #CleanAirBill went thru Committee Stage in about half an hour! We’d worked hard to deal with everyone’s comments so it meant there was widespread support and no opposition [sic].”

The law, if it is approved, would mean the government has to publish detailed reports regarding air quality, and compliance would be reviewed annually.

As well as improving the quality of air in outside, it could also have an impact on air pollution within buildings.

This comes after it was determined two-year-old Awaab Ishak died from prolonged exposure to black mould in the housing association property he lived with his parents. This is despite many requests to Rochdale Boroughwide Housing to remove the mould from the premises.

Baroness Brinton, who has given her support to the bill, said the law would give tenants “the right to take action on their human rights”.

She noted that many people’s health is being “ruined by the lack of clean air, whether inside or out”.

To make sure your building is pollution free, consider air quality testing.
