A gym in Cornwall has had sound restrictions placed on it, after neighbouring businesses raised concerns about loud noise coming from the premises all hours of the day.
Snap Fitness, located on Bodmin Retail Park, received 14 public objections to a planning application to open 24 hours a day, Bude Today reported.
One of the main concerns was about loud music coming from the building during the night and worries about a lack of soundproofing.
Among the objectors was vet Fiona Dawber, who works in the building next door. She told the publication: “I can confirm there is a severe lack of sound proofing of the gym which results in frequent issues with noise within the veterinary surgery even during the daytime.”
She said staff has had to request for the noise to be lowered numerous times, particularly when animals have to be anaesthetised and kept calm or when they are recovering from surgery.
Loud noises also cause stress to animals overnight, such as rabbits and guinea pigs who are prey creatures.
Jackie Greig also raised her objections, saying this trauma could contravene animal welfare laws.
The Animal Welfare Act 2006 dictates that owners and keepers need to ensure animals have a suitable environment to live and be protected from animal cruelty, including causing unnecessary suffering.
Despite this, the application was granted for 24-hour opening of the gym, but sound restrictions have been imposed.
The permission stipulates ‘no music shall be played that is audible within the gym between midnight and 6am’.
