What Is A Thermographic Survey?

The housing stock in the UK is some of the least energy efficient in Europe. Housing accounts for 20 per cent of all energy use in the UK, as we heat our homes, use hot water, put on lights, and cook food. Heating our homes and water accounts for 80 per cent of that energy use, much of which escapes and is wasted.

A thermographic survey will help find the weak points in the insulation in our homes, so issues can be addressed, and our homes made far more efficient. But thermal imaging can also help find other issues such as damp and mould. We have a closer look at what it all means.

What is a thermographic survey?

Thermal imaging involves the use of specialised infrared cameras that capture heat radiation. The images produced can show variations in temperature, and warm objects will stand out against a cooler background.

Thermographic surveys have become sought after within the construction industry for both new builds and existing properties. They provide an instant image of the fabric of the building, identifying uncontrolled air leakage pathways, cold bridging, and defects in the insulation.

The resulting images from a thermographic survey will be summarised in a report which is then used to improve the efficiency of heating, insulation, and sometimes, air conditioning units.

can be used to improve the efficiency of heating and in some cases, air conditioning units.

Why have a thermographic survey?

Undertaking a thermographic survey means you will be able to address any problems, and make savings on your future energy bills and reduce your carbon footprint. Here are some other reasons:

• Satisfy BREEAM (Building Research Establishment's Environmental Assessment Method) requirements, the world's first sustainability rating scheme for the built environment

• Continuity of insulation, highlighting any missing or badly installed insulation that may lead to heat loss

• Insulation Quality

• Identify Air Leakage, in combination with airtightness testing.

• Black Mould / Condensation Issues
